Abstract

This study examines the relationship between education, women’s empowerment, gender equity, and poverty eradication in Cross River State, Nigeria, using Structuration Theory as its theoretical framework. The study emphasizes education as a critical instrument for empowering women by enhancing their knowledge, self-confidence, skills, and capacity to participate meaningfully in poverty eradication efforts. Key initiatives examined include Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE), the National Gender Policy, education, and mentorship programmes. The study sought to establish the relationship between education, women’s empowerment, gender equity, and poverty eradication in Cross River State. Both primary and secondary data were utilized. Relevant literature was reviewed, while a field survey was conducted across three selected communities. A population of 125 respondents was studied using stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis, while the hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicate that education, gender equity, and women’s empowerment positively contribute to poverty eradication in Cross River State. The study therefore recommends increased investment by government and relevant organizations in equitable access to education, women’s economic empowerment, and holistic empowerment programmes that enhance women’s participation in social and economic development.
